CYPRUS – Pegeia Primary School
Pegeia Primary School is located at the west coast of Cyprus in Pafos district. Our students are from 6 to 12 years old. There are 163 pupils in our school this year divided in 9 classrooms. There are 13 teachers working at the school.
Due to its location, Pegeia is a place with a large number of immigrants and EU citizens. This has inevitably influenced our school population which has changed radical during the last 15 years. Therefore, 65 of our students are non-indigenous coming from 13 different countries. This multicultural context of the school has influenced our scope and work. Our main aim is to welcome students’ diversity, make them feel like home and implement any necessary help to provide equal educational opportunities for all students.
Some of the areas the school and community works on to facilitate this aim are:
The Greek Language Lessons which are provided to the newcomers in the school that do not speak Greek. The students are organized in three groups, depending on their language level and they have specific Greek lessons out of their classroom 2-4 hours per week.
After School Activities (on English language and ICT) for students that come from non-European countries.
School Festivities that embrace and promote the multicultural nature of the school.
Seminars for parents on educational, psychological and social issues.
