CYPRUS – Pegeia Pri­ma­ry School

 

Pegeia Pri­ma­ry School is lo­cat­ed at the west coast of Cyprus in Pafos dis­trict. Our stu­dents are from 6 to 12 years old. There are 163 pupils in our school this year di­vid­ed in 9 class­rooms. There are 13 teach­ers work­ing at the school.

Due to its lo­ca­tion, Pegeia is a place with a large num­ber of im­mi­grants and EU cit­i­zens. This has in­evitably in­flu­enced our school pop­u­la­tion which has changed rad­i­cal dur­ing the last 15 years. There­fore, 65 of our stu­dents are non-in­dige­nous com­ing from 13 dif­fer­ent coun­tries. This mul­ti­cul­tur­al con­text of the school has in­flu­enced our scope and work. Our main aim is to wel­come stu­dents’  di­ver­si­ty, make them feel like home and im­ple­ment any nec­es­sary help to pro­vide equal ed­u­ca­tion­al op­por­tu­ni­ties for all stu­dents.

Some of the ar­eas the school and com­mu­ni­ty works on to fa­cil­i­tate this aim are:

The Greek Lan­guage Lessons which are pro­vid­ed to the new­com­ers in the school that do not speak Greek. The stu­dents are or­ga­nized in three groups, de­pend­ing on their lan­guage lev­el and they have spe­cif­ic Greek lessons out of their class­room 2-4 hours per week.

Af­ter School Ac­tiv­i­ties (on En­glish lan­guage and ICT) for stu­dents that come from non-Eu­ro­pean coun­tries.

School Fes­tiv­i­ties that em­brace and pro­mote the mul­ti­cul­tur­al na­ture of the school.

Sem­i­nars for par­ents on ed­u­ca­tion­al, psy­cho­log­i­cal and so­cial is­sues.
